Leukosis Analysis

TwoCowsEating-Idaho-72res-2012.jpgAgSource can test for Bovine Leukosis Virus (BLV) in milk samples. To maintain a BLV-free herd you should test all purchased animals before exposing them to other livestock.

Direct losses to this disease include increased replacement costs, loss of income from condemned carcasses of cull cows, and the inability to export cattle, semen and embryos to countries that maintain BLV control programs. Further losses may include reduced reproductive efficiency and decreased milk production.

BLV is spread by blood and can be transmitted through contaminated needles, dehorners, calving chains and rectal sleeves. To prevent transmission of this disease you need to know which animals are infected.

To maintain a BLV-free herd, remember to test each animal you buy before exposing her to your other livestock.
