Seed Germination Sampling Sheet

Sampling and Sample Size

Obtaining a representative sample is the most important factor in obtaining accurate testing results. When sampling seed in bulk; try to take at least 7 samples from different locations and depths of the seed lot. Use of a seed probe is recommended; hand-sampling seed is acceptable if representative. When sampling seed in bags, sample 5 bags plus 10 percent of the total number of bags (i.e. 50 bags, sample 10 bags) and divide the sample down to the desired weight for testing.

Standard Germination Tests

Warm Germ -

This test determines percentage of normal seedling that will develop under ideal growing conditions.

Cold Germ ----

This test determines how well seeds will emerge if planted under unfavorable field conditions. The seed is planted in a non-sterile sand-soil mixture and placed in a ten degree Celsius chamber for seven days. The test is then continued in light at twenty-five degrees Celsius for another seven days. Total testing time is 14 days.

Seed Count ---

Determines the number of seeds per pound.

Moisture Test -

Seed submitted for moisture testing should be sent in a moisture-proof container. A minimum of ½ pound of seed should be submitted.
