Analytical results are only as good as the sample. Clean hands and clean containers are necessary to avoid contamination. The following procedures are recommended to get a sample that is representative of the feed or forage. We need from one pint to one quart of feed collected. Hay Samples: 1. A regular forage sampler is recommended. They take a sample 1 1/8" in diameter by 18 inches long. 2. Each ‘lot' or cutting of hay should be completed separately. 3. Pull samples from 15 to 20 random bales. Probe from the end of square bales into the center. 4. Probe stacks of hay at random 15 to 20 times. 5. Probe round bales from the outside diameter toward the center, again collecting 15 to 20 probes. Silage Samples: 1. Collect 3 to 5 handfuls of silage from each of several loads from each lot of silage while filling the silo. 2. From store silage: Do Not Collect Off The Top. Either dig down 2 to 3 feet or collect freshly unloaded material. Take 3 to 5 handfuls from different locations. Concentrates and Grain: 1. Take 5 to 6 random cup sized samples from different locations in the mixture. All samples should be placed in a plastic bag for shipment. Squeeze the air out of the bag and tie it shut. If shipping is delayed for more than one day the samples should be frozen.
