pH measures of the hydrogen ion concentration in water. A pH of 7 is neutral. Values above 7 are alkaline or basic and those below 7 are acidic. Acidic water often is corrosive. Iron also may be a problem in acidic water.
Acceptable results: There is no health standard. Values from 7.5 to 8.3 are ideal.
Sources: Low values often are caused by lack of carbonate minerals from limestone and minerals in the aquifer. Some contaminated sources like landfills may lower the pH.
